The other day I had a couple of guys step into the shop and both guys coincidentally suffered from wrist issues while punching. They were both in the market for new gloves, so I did my best to suggest gloves that would get the job done.Ā

I suggested two gloves the Rival RS1 and the Everlast Powerlock 2. Both boxing gloves offer great wrist support and have few different color options and the price difference between them offer the customer a choice between an economical option and a higher tier glove. Everlast Powerlock 2 $99.99 VS Rival RS1 $179.95-$209.95

The Rival RS1 features the "ergo" wrist that has a distinctive lace channel that helps reinforce the wrist, while the Powerlock 2 has an offset lace system along with a padded wrist that almost gives off a cast like feel.Ā

Although the Powerlock 2 offers great wrist support at a cost-effective price, it's a very snug fitting glove and the padded wrist makes it harder to get in and out the glove. Also, some customers find it a bit uncomfortable.Ā  The Rival RS1's styling may not be for everyone, the distinctive wrist and flashy graphics might a bit too much for some.Ā

Let's say you aren't in the market for new gloves, but do want to alleviate some wrist pain, well don't worry you know we got you!Ā

Handwraps: If you are using anything less than 180" you may want to size up in wraps. A long wrap will allow you to reinforce your wrist and even create a knuckle pad. If you already use 180" handwraps you may want to consider 210" handwraps

Tape: Although this may not be the most cost-effective option it is one of the best options to really lock in your wrist.Ā  You can use tape over your handwraps and gloves to give your wrist the support it needs. If you choose this method don't use duct tape on your gloves, since it can peel the leather. Use medical tape or buy tape by the box, like this 12 roll box by Wartape.Ā Ā

Mexican style bandages: These wraps are like medical tape but are reusable and washable. They come in 120", so I would suggest using them on top of your regular handwraps.Ā Ā

If you're experiencing wrist pain when boxing it may not always be your gloves, now if you're looking for an excuse to cop a new pair then why not? However, If you don't need any gloves possibly get longer wraps, experiment with tape or bandages to help give support to your wrist.Ā
